Law Library Workshops (Semester A, 2021-2022)

At the beginning of a new academic year, the Law Collection and Services Section has arranged a series of workshops with the purpose of developing and reinforcing users' legal research skills. The law library workshops cover a variety of topics: common law materials, arbitration and mediation materials, law journals and other secondary materials, searching major law databases and citing legal information. Locating Common Law Materials

Demonstrates how to find and note up common law cases and statutes.

Finding Arbitration and Mediation Materials

In this workshop, the following topics will be covered, law governing arbitration and mediation, relevant case law, international conventions, arbitration and mediation rules, books, journals, key databases and other secondary materials. Lexis Advance Hong Kong

This is a major law database that provides primary and secondary sources of law in Hong Kong and other common law jurisdictions. Important works that are only available from Lexis include the Halsbury’s Law of Hong Kong, Annotated Ordinances of Hong Kong and a lot more.

Practical Law

Practical Law provides a vast set of practice notes and standard documents which can be used as they are or tailored for specific legal transactions, meaning you don’t need to draft or research from scratch. The database is also structured in a way to facilitate comparative study across jurisdictions.

Westlaw Asia & Westlaw Classic

Westlaw Asia and Westlaw Classic provides primary and secondary sources of law in Hong Kong and other common law jurisdictions. Important works that are only available from Westlaw Asia include the Civil Procedure, Hong Kong Civil Procedure, Archbold, Archbold Hong Kong and a lot more.

Citing Legal Information

The Oxford University Standard for the Citation of Legal Authorities (OSCOLA) is a citation style widely used in the UK academic world. It is preferred by the CityU School of Law for student works. In this workshop, users will practice citing different kinds of publications using OSCOLA.
