Sentential Features (a)

In this section, you can see the script of a poster presentation done in the Student Research Showcase held at the City University of Hong Kong in September, 2019. Are there any sentential features specific to poster presentations? Where are they located?

In the script, identify the sentential features specific to poster presentations by:
(1) highlighting the word(s)/phrase(s)/sentence(s) pertaining to a particular sentential feature with the use of your mouse;
(2) annotating the highlighted part(s) in the box(es) that pop out.

The following guiding questions will help you do the analysis along the way:
A. What is the tense used in the introduction? Why?
B. What tense should we use in the methodology? Why?
C. What is the way to emphasize our active role in the research process?

Finally, you may check your answers by clicking the “Answer” button. The same script will pop up with all the features highlighted. You may then view the annotations of the features by moving the mouse cursor to the highlighted parts one by one.

Management of finance among university students

I am Ginnie. I studied in the course English Academic Purposes 2 in Semester B this year.

Nowadays, financial management has become a crucial topic in the world. The trend of using credit cards is also getting more popular. As many people lack sufficient financial knowledge, it is very common to see them having heavy credit card debts. Many university students also encounter different types of financial problems. There are many studies related to the financial behaviors of university students in Europe and Asian countries. However, up to now, there is still no research comparing the financial behavior of our local and non-local university students. Therefore, we aim to investigate how local and non-local university students manage their finance.

We asked 48 participants to complete a questionnaire to collect quantitative data. We also invited 9 respondents to be interviewed and to elaborate on their financial status.

For the analysis part, we compared the financial performance between foreign students and local students, and found that the number of Hong Kong students who saved more than 20% is more than the non-local students. Therefore, the local students were able to perform better than the non-local students in the aspect of saving.

The graph here shows that both foreign and Hong Kong students saved money because of short term goals, especially when it comes to entertainment and travelling.
At the same time, we were surprised that only 10% of the respondents exceeded their credit limit before. It shows that students were cautious about using credit cards. Half of the respondents did not even have any credit cards. Here you can see that around 20%-30% local and non-local participants did not spend any money for the sake of saving. This pie chart also shows that both Hong Kong and foreign students tended not to invest in anything. Most local students spent between zero to four percentage on investment.

In the interviews, one interviewee claimed that she overspent after applying for credit cards because she could pay her bills later. High daily expenses, like the transportation cost and study loan, also resulted in limited saving. One of the local interviewees stated that she didn’t invest because she did not have enough money and knowledge of investment.

To conclude, we suggest that students should download apps which helps them manage their finance better. We also recommend schools to organize financial events to increase students’ interest in financial management.

Thank you.
