Science 2020: Discovery of grain-boundary disordered nanolayers in intermetallic alloys

New super alloy is extremely strong, yet ductile and flexible.

A) Atom maps reconstructed using 3D-APT show the distribution of each element. Iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), and boron (B)are enriched (darker in colour) at the nanolayer, whereas nickel (Ni), aluminum (Al), and titanium (Ti) are depleted  (lighter in colour) correspondingly. (B) and (C) also show the same results.

New super alloy is extremely strong, yet ductile and flexible.

HAADF-STEM image reveals the ultrathin disordered layer at the grain boundaries with a thickness of about 5 nm.

New super alloy is extremely strong, yet ductile and flexible.

These pictures suggest that the alloy (NDI-SM) has achieved a superior strength-ductility synergy at ambient temperature and extraordinary heat resistance at elevated temperatures.

New super alloy is extremely strong, yet ductile and flexible.

Spatial morphology and multicomponent nature of the MCINPs.(A) 3D reconstruction map of an APT needle tip confirming the nanocomposited microstructure of the Al7Ti7 alloy. (B) High-resolution atom maps showing the atomistic distribution within the L12 MCINP of the Al7Ti7 alloy. (C) Proximity histogram across the matrix and nanoparticles revealing the multicomponent nature of the MCINPs of the Al7Ti7 alloy. (D) Ordering crystallographic structure and site occupancy of the L12 MCINP by density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the Al7Ti7 alloy.

New super alloy is extremely strong, yet ductile and flexible.

Exceptional strength-ductility combination achieved in the MCINPS alloys at ambient temperature. (A) Engineering stress-strain curves of the MCINPS alloys compared with the FeCoNi base alloy (12), showing a significant increase of strength without ductility reduction. The Al7Ti7 alloy exhibits ductile dimpled structures without macroscopic necking. (B) Yield strength versus the product of strength and ductility of the MCINPS alloys compared with those of other high-performing materials.
