City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) Press is dedicated to the dissemination of knowledge. In collaboration with The Hong Kong Award for Young People (AYP) “Dreamwalker” career exploration programme? , CityUHK Press specially organised the "One-Day Director" publishing industry experience last week (13 August), inviting students from CCC Rotary Secondary School to explore the professional fields and practical workflows of book publishing.

This event aimed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the publishing industry and enable them to grasp the complete lifecycle of a book from conceptualization to publication and distribution. Under the guidance of the team at CityUHK Press, the participants experienced multiple publishing practices, including:

  • Participation in Editorial Meetings: Gaining firsthand insight into the planning of book publishing projects.
  • Visuals and Product Operations: Participating in promotional photography for books and the product packaging process.
  • Marketing and Promotion Planning: Applying creativity based on target audiences to formulate book marketing and social media promotion plans.
  • Printing Craftsmanship and Industrial Inspection: Conducting in-depth visits to Chak On Workshop, the Digital Creative Hub, the Design & Print Solutions Centre, and CityUHK Bookstore for a comprehensive understanding of the publishing supply chain.
  • Book Creation Experience: At the end of the event, crafting a unique mini-book through the “I'm Authoring” workshop to personally experience book publishing.

During the event, the Director of CityUHK Press also had lunch with the students, sharing rich experiences in the publishing field, learning insights, and career planning advice. This encouraged them to explore diverse interests and build a cross-disciplinary professional vision. Through this highly interactive experience, the students not only gained an in-depth understanding of the daily operations of the publishing industry, but also appreciated the professional knowledge and teamwork behind every publication.

Looking ahead, CityUHK Press hopes to organise more diverse youth development programmes for young people to gain a deeper understanding of the publishing industry, broaden their career horizons, and inspire more innovative thinking and vibrant energy into cultural heritage and the publishing sector.
