Research Camp (October 2022)

by Chris AU

The Research Camp was held in Seminar Room 6301 and via Zoom Webinar on 19 October 2022. The event started with a welcoming speech by Prof WAN Wai Yee (Associate Dean, CityU School of Law). The purpose of the research camp was to collect feedback and suggestions on how the School can successfully carry out the exercise.

The Research Camp consisted of two sessions. The topics of the presentation were as follows (according to the order of presentation):

  • Update on Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2026, timelines and strategies (including discussions)(Prof WAN Wai Yee, Associate Dean and Professor, CityU School of Law)
  • Presentation on publishing in US market
(Prof Virginia HARPER HO, Professor, CityU School of Law)

To start with, Prof Wan briefly recaptured past statistics of RAE 2020 and 2024, as well as a comparison with peer universities in relation to research outputs. In spite of the notable improvement, the School will strive to produce high-quality papers and achieve greater success in the next assessment exercise.

Besides, in order to get well-prepared for the 2026 exercise, the first mock run will commence in 2023 for vetting and organising research outputs. The main focus will be in the impact case studies and environment statements. Colleagues were also encouraged to start identifying the links between how research has assisted in resulting in high-ranking output and knowledge transfer.

The Research Camp then moved on to the next section— Presentation on publishing in US market by Prof Virginia Harper Ho. She set out both the benefits and challenges on publishing in US Law Reviews and provided faculty members with a comprehensive background for journal submission on Scholastica.

The day ended with a discussion session. Prof Harper Ho advised some tips that may lead to better placements beyond the substance. Our colleagues exchanged their thoughts about indexing on different publishing platforms and how it can effectively reach more readers and expand its possibility to get published. It is expected that there will also be RAE meetings in the future.
