The Department of Physics now invites applications for admission to Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme at CityU in 2024/25.
The Department excels in research over a wide range of topics, and supports PhD studies in the following areas (but not limited to):
- Theoretical and Computational Physics
- Spectroscopy and Imaging
- Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics
- Quantum Materials
- Soft Matter and Biophysics
Students interested in any of the related fields should contact and discuss with their potential supervisors. The applicant is advised to obtain the consent of one of the academic staff members to be his/her supervisor before submitting the application.
Eligible new full-time PhD students will be considered for the award of the Postgraduate Studentship. The Studentship rate for 2023/24 is HK$17,800 (~US$2,282) per month.

Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS)
Applicants who could demonstrate outstanding qualities of academic performance, research ability/potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities are encouraged to apply for admission through “Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme”.
What the Fellowship and CityU Offer?
In 2024-25 HKPFS, each fellowship recipient will receive:
- A monthly stipend of HK$27,600 (approximately US$3,538)
- A conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$13,800 (approximately US$1,760) per year
- An additional entrance scholarship of around HK$89,496 (approximately US$11,473) covering tuition and on-campus hostel accommodation fees for the first year of studies
- Additional financial subsidies/ awards supported by RGC may be given to eligible Fellowship recipients
