A Wireless, Implantable Smart Artificial Ligament Providing Real-Time Feedback on Joint Kinematics

This project introduces a piezoionic device functioning as a sensing artificial ligament that converts joint bending into electrical signals. Unlike conventional prosthetic ligaments that provide only structural support, this artificial ligament can sense the joint bending degree and deliver real-time information to patients on load and operational status. The intelligent ligament is capable of detecting knee joint flexion with an accuracy of 0.5 degrees. This precision information is crucial for both injury prevention and rehabilitation monitoring. By accurately capturing the full range of motion, the implanted intelligent ligament shows strong potential as a clinical tool for real-time physiological monitoring and diagnostics in humans or animals.
