CityUHK advances AI-enhanced teaching and team-based learning at Christian Alliance Cheng Wing Gee College Teachers’ Development Day

On 27 February, City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) hosted 65 teachers from Christian Alliance Cheng Wing Gee College for a Teachers’ Development Day. The programme explored practical strategies for integrating emerging technologies and collaborative pedagogies into classroom practice.
In his welcome remarks, Professor Chan Chi-hou, Vice-President (Community Engagement), highlighted the shared commitment between the University and the College to whole-person education and community service. He emphasised that in an era of rapid technological advancement, teachers’ professional growth is essential to sustaining students’ curiosity and creativity.
Recognising the College’s interest in AI-enhanced teaching and team-based learning, CityUHK invited academic and professional colleagues to share insights and practical approaches relevant to classroom application.
Dr Chan Chung, Teaching Fellow from the Department of Computer Science, delivered a talk titled Making GenAI Socratic for Computational Thinking. The talk examined how generative AI can be designed and deployed in a Socratic manner to stimulate questioning, reasoning and structured problem-solving. Through practical illustrations, Dr Chan demonstrated how AI tools can support students in developing computational thinking skills, while encouraging deeper reflection rather than passive reliance on technology.
Teachers were divided into two groups to take part in interactive sessions featuring team-based learning tracks and experience collaborative pedagogies from different perspectives.

One group joined the session led by Dr Leon Lei from the Talent and Education Development Office, which provided teachers with an experiential introduction to team-based learning design principles, guiding participants through structured team activities that highlighted peer accountability, purposeful task design and facilitated discussion.
The other group attended a subject-focused session delivered by Professor Lo Wing Cheong, Associate Professor of the Department of Mathematics. The session explored how team-based learning, integrated with AI tools, can strengthen students’ autonomy and cross-disciplinary problem-solving capabilities in mathematics and science contexts.
The Teachers’ Development Day provided a platform for dialogue and mutual learning between secondary school educators and university academics. CityUHK will continue to support educators through sustained partnership, knowledge exchange and innovative professional development initiatives.
