About the Workshop

The Summer Research Workshop is an intensive one-month research training programme for outstanding bachelor’s and master’s students from institutions outside Hong Kong. The Workshop aims to strengthen research skills, foster academic development, and broaden intellectual horizons through seminars, hands-on projects, and networking activities. Participants will engage in sustained dialogue and mentorship with faculty from the Department of Biostatistics, the Department of Computer Science, and the Department of Data Science within the College of Computing.

Benefits for Participants

  • One-to-one mentorship with a distinguished professor
    Successful applicants will be supervised by an eminent professor in CityUHK to plan and carry out a research project. The event organiser will help participants match with mentors based on participants’ given priorities and research interest.
  • Free accommodation 
    University accommodation will be provided for week 1 & week 2 (i.e. 3 to 17 July 2026)Students who choose to remain in person at CityUHK for weeks 3 and 4 (i.e. 18 to 31 July 2026) will have to pay the rate of 2026 Summer Letting set by Student Residence Office: HK$500 per double occupancy room per night.
  • Financial support for airfare*:

    a) Places in the Guangdong Province and Macau SAR of Chinese Mainland: maximum HK$1,000
    b) Places other than the Guangdong Province of the Chinese Mainland: maximum HK$2,000
    c) Asian countries/areas excluding the Chinese Mainland and Macau SAR: maximum HK$2,000
    d) Countries and areas other than (a), (b) and (c): maximum HK$4,000
  • Off-campus local cultural activity 
    A half‑day Hong Kong sightseeing tour will be provided, including coach transportation to and from CityUHK, lunch, and entrance fees to the listed scenic attractions.

*The subsidy amount to the participants depends on the location of departure and will be based on actual expenses with supporting documents provided and reimbursed upon the successful completion of the programme.

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate students in year 3 and year 4 with CGPA 3.0 or above (or equivalent) from a recognised institution outside of Hong Kong, China.
  • Master’s degree students with CGPA 3.0 or above (or equivalent) from a recognised institution outside of Hong Kong, China.

Timeline

The Summer Research Workshop will run for one month, from 3 July to 31 July 2026.

Notes: 
- All participants are required to attend the Programme in person at CityUHK for Week 1 and Week 2 (i.e. 3 to 17 July 2026)

Visitor Visa to Enter Hong Kong SAR, China

If you need a visa to enter Hong Kong SAR, China, it is recommended to apply for the visa or eTA (electronic Travel Authorization) promptly to avoid any unforeseen delays. Participation in the workshop does not necessitate a study permit; therefore, applicants should apply for a visitor visa as the programme duration is less than 6 months.

Proposed Field of Research and Mentor(s)

Each participant of the Summer Research Programme will be mentored by a faculty member from the Department of Biostatistics, Department of Computer Science or Department of Data Science. 

You have to indicate your proposed faculty mentor and field of research in the application based on your research interest. You are strongly encouraged to propose more than one professoriate staff (mentors) you would like to work with in your application.

Selection of Applicants

Selection of applicants will be conducted by the event organiser based on a number of criteria's including but not limited to:

  • Outstanding academic performance
  • Strong interest in research postgraduate studies
  • Previous research experience
  • Interest in interdisciplinary studies
  • High English proficiency
  • Mature and Independent

Registration Fee

Registration Fee: HK$1,500 (the registration fee is refundable upon completion of the workshop marked by the submission of final research project to the College of Computing)

  • Personal statement (300-500 words) describing: your reason(s) for applying to the CityUHK Summer Research Programme; what do you hope to gain from this experience; your short and long-term career goals.
  • Research interest (100-200 words): Visit the homepage of your proposed faculty member and describe the research topic(s) that interest you, and the area(s) that you would like to focus on if you are admitted to the CityUHK Summer Research Programme 2026.
  • Supporting documents

    - CV highlighting your academic achievement, research experience, and professional credentials
    - Final/Latest transcript and certificate of your Bachelor’s programme 
    - Final/Latest transcript and certificate of your Master’s programme (if any) 
    - Result of your English language proficiency test (e.g., TOEFL, IELTS), if available
