College of Computing - Distinguished Seminar by Prof. Siwei MA: Immersive Media Technologies and Industrial Applications

03 February 2026 (Tuesday)

The College of Computing (CC) welcomed Prof. Siwei MA, Professor at the School of Computer Science, Peking University, to deliver a Distinguished Seminar on 3 February 2026. His talk, titled “Immersive Media Technologies and Industrial Applications”, attracted an engaged audience of faculty members, students, and alumni with strong interest in next‑generation visual media and interactive systems.

In his talk, Prof. Ma reviewed the evolution of media technology, highlighting the transition from traditional spoken and written media to intelligent data driven media. He emphasized that technologies can create new types of media, and vice versa media applications will drive technologies progress.

Prof. Ma described immersive media as a key direction for the future of media technology, outlining the key features of immersive systems such as spatial vision, multi-modality, and the virtual to mixed reality. He discussed immersive media content acquisition methods, including multi-view stereo reconstruction, LiDAR scanning, depth camera, and AI-driven 3D generation. Applications such as immersive video room, immersive 3D scene interaction, and free‑view television broadcasting were also introduced to illustrate emerging viewing paradigms.

Throughout the seminar, Prof. Ma shared insights into the application of immersive media technologies across areas such as broadcasting, entertainment, education, and cultural heritage, while highlighting current challenges as well as emerging trends in research and industry.

Prof. Ma concluded by encouraging the audience to imagine the future of immersive media and its impact on human–media interaction. This was followed by a lively Q&A session, during which participants engaged in in‑depth discussions with the speaker on technical challenges and potential applications.
