Connecting to the World Music Seminar: A Musical Tour between East & West

We are no strangers to music from the East and West, but what about the music in between? In this seminar, led by speakers and musicians from The Nur Collective, we will go on a musical tour from Tianshan, through central and western Asia, to the Mediterranean.
We will learn about the music of these lands through demonstrations and appreciation of local musical instruments, such as the darbuka, oud and qanun, and their distinctive melodies and rhythms. And through music, we will also learn more about their history, culture and geography.

About The Nur Collective

Founded in 2018, The Nur Collective is a group of musicians and cultural workers with a shared passion for the musical traditions and cultures of the western-most parts of China, through Central and West Asia to North Africa. Its mission is to bring this exquisite cultural landscape to the wider public in Hong Kong by performing with traditional instruments used in the region. The performances include the Freespace Jazz Festival 2021, the musical event “cartographic counterpoint #1 – From Persia, and the sounds of Central Asia/West Asia/the Western Regions” at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, and performances for the LCSD and various local universities.
