Fruitful Internship Experience

Jonathan Lu Chun-yu
Business Operations Management, Year 4

Jonathan has made extraordinary efforts to boost his competitiveness in the job market through participating in internships in different professional fields around the world: he started his journey as a marketing and PR intern of the media company NBCUniversal in Singapore; right after that, Jonathan took up an audit placement at Deloitte, the esteemed business services provider. Later on, he completed an operations and finance internship at a boutique business improvement consultancy called Sandwalk Partners based in Sydney, Australia through the Global Work Attachment Programme (GWAP) organised by Career and Leadership Centre (CLC).

What Jonathan valued was not only the exposure to the technical skills in a particular trade, but also the attitude of the people that he worked with. After working at Deloitte, he realised the importance of being independent and critical in thinking. “You are expected to stick to the ethical guidelines even though whom are you auditing for are at the same time your clients,” he said.

Reflecting on his experience at Sandwalk Partners in Sydney, Jonathan said, “It is the ‘ownership of things’ that is the most important in everything you do.” The “ownership of things”, which Jonathan learnt from his supervisor, is this strong sense of responsibility for one’s work as if everything that you do is “yours”.

Being keenly observant and critical, yet at the same time humble and diligent, Jonathan’s insight into business and work will take him very far into his future career.
