On the 8th of October 1892, the Peninsula & Oriental Steam Navigation Company’s S.S. Bokhara left Shanghai for Hong Kong. Two days later, after a battle with an ill-fated typhoon, she sank beneath the Penghu Islands within minutes of hitting the reefs along the isle. What happened next were events leading to a rare moment of humanity and solidarity between East and West relations, as the Bokhara survivors returned to Hong Kong safely with the assistance from the Fisher Island Lighthouse.

Run Run Shaw Library’s Lighthouse Heritage Research Connections (LHRC) programme illustrates the events that took place before and after the Bokhara’s wreck in 1892. Join City University of Hong Kong’s LHRC team in the epic story of the search for the missing steamship and its aftermath in Hong Kong and the Penghu Islands.
