Veterinary Community Outreach Programme (VCOP)

Responsive image The strong bond between humans and their pets, forged over thousands of years, brings a myriad of benefits to human physical and emotional wellbeing, including improved cardiovascular health, reduced social isolation and improved mental health. In return, owners are responsible for their pet's basic care including veterinary visits for vaccinations, neutering surgery and parasite control.

The financial impact of basic pet care can weigh heavily on socioeconomically disadvantaged groups. Solutions are needed to avoid depriving low-income households from pet ownership and/or negative animal welfare outcomes in all Hong Kong's communities.

About the Programme

In collaboration with the CityU Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences, the Centre for Animal Health and Welfare (CAHW) is committed to supporting socioeconomically disadvantaged communities and to promoting pet welfare through the Veterinary Community Outreach Programme (VCOP). Equipped with a mobile veterinary unit and dedicated professionals, we strive to complement and extend the work of established local stakeholders through collaborations that benefit the community.

  • Providing practical support to pet owners in disadvantaged communities

  • Subsidized neutering, vaccinations and parasite control for Hong Kong's unowned dogs and cats

  • Empowering owners to give their pets the best care through education

  • Fully-supervised volunteering opportunities for Hong Kong's next generation of veterinarians

  • Research and innovation to tackle unique problems facing animals and pet-owners in the region
