Prof. KHOO Bee Luan wins Gold Prize at Korea International Women’s Invention Exposition (KIWIE), the only awardee from Hong Kong
Prof. KHOO Bee Luan has been awarded a Gold Prize at the Korea International Women’s Invention Exposition (KIWIE) for her invention Microfluidic-based Personalized Biochip for Healthcare (MetaPred). Prof. Khoo was the only awardee from Hong Kong at this year’s exposition.
Developed by Prof. Khoo and her research team (Mr. HE Qiuyang, Mr. ZHU Mingze and Ms FONG Ching Yin), MetaPred is a novel microphysiological platform that combines proprietary microfluidic chip technology and artificial intelligence. Powered by proprietary biochips, the system reconstructs biomimetic tumour microenvironments using patient-derived samples. Combined with deep learning-driven image analysis, MetaPred enables efficient, quantitative evaluation of anti-cancer drug response. It addresses critical limitations of traditional animal models and static cell culture, offering a translational tool for preclinical drug screening and prediction of personalised oncology treatments.
KIWIE is an international platform for women innovators to share knowledge and experiences, explore emerging technological trends, and showcase inventions with societal and industrial impact. This year, the exposition attracted strong global participation, receiving 591 inventions in total, including 137 inventions from South Korea and 454 inventions from 20 overseas countries and regions.
