MATE World Championship 2022

23-25 JUN 2022

The CityU Underwater Robotics Team formed by students from the BME department as well as students from sister engineering departments, supervised by Dr. Pakpong Chirarattananon, Dr. Yajing Shen and two other faculty members from the Department of Electronic Engineering, participated in the MATE World Championship 2022. Student representatives from the team attended the competition held in the U.S. in June 2022, and ranked no. 9 among 18 teams from all over the world joining the university-level competition.

The MATE ROV Competition uses remotely operated vehicles (ROVs a.k.a. underwater robots) to inspire and challenge students to learn and creatively apply science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to solve real-world problems and strengthen their critical thinking, collaboration, entrepreneurship, and innovation. The competition challenges students from across the U.S. and around the world to engineer ROVs to complete a set of mission tasks based on real-world, workplace scenarios. It emphasizes and inspires a mindset of entrepreneurship and innovation by requiring students to transform their teams into “start-up” companies that respond to an RFP. In addition to their robots, the student teams also prepare technical reports, create a marketing (poster) display, and deliver engineering presentations.
