Project

Gesture and Embodied Interaction in Collaborative Learning: A Multimodal Corpus Study

Duties

This project examines the role of gesture in student group learning in a multimodal corpus. The Multimodal Corpus of Chinese Academic Written and Spoken English (MuCAWSE) contains approximately 24 hours of authentic student group work activities filmed in English language classrooms at a British university in Mainland China. Sequences of learning will be identified and operationalised through the concept of Language Related Episodes (LREs), which provide an analytical unit for examining the forms and functions of gesture and the role of embodied interaction in collaborative learning.  The appointee will be joining a growing network of students, academics, and researchers who work in areas relating to gesture studies in Hong Kong and the wider region.  The main duties will include:

  1. English language data processing, transcription and coding of a multimodal corpus (student interactions on British university campus in Mainland China);
  2. Analysis of gestures and/or multimodal interaction;
  3. Management of part-time research assistants to help with transcription and coding;
  4. Activities associated with publishing, e.g. literature review, drafting, proof reading; and
  5. Ongoing work related to the research project.

Requirements

A Master’s degree with 1 year’s post-qualification working experience relevant to the project.  Expertise in qualitative and/or quantitative methods of corpus analysis and gesture studies/multimodal interaction are highly desirable.  Experience in using ELAN annotation software and in managing research assistants are preferred.
