Professor/Associate Professor (Applied Linguistics/TESOL/Professional Communication/Corporate Communication/Advertising/Public Relations/English Literature/Creative Writing) in the Department of English [Ref. C/277/09]

The Department of English is a leading centre for English studies in the Asian region, and has an international reputation for its research on English language and literature, creative writing and professional communication.  It is currently entering an exciting new stage of development with new initiatives in English for the creative professions, digital media, literary and cultural studies, rhetoric and composition, and interdisciplinary studies.  Further information on the Department is available at http://www.cityu.edu.hk/en/.

Duties

A Professor is expected to provide leadership in research, teaching, curriculum development and administration, supervision of students, as well as contribute to the Department’s administration as appropriate. 

An Associate Professor is expected to conduct quality research, teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses, develop curriculum, supervise students, and contribute to the Department’s administration as appropriate.


Requirements

Professor : A PhD in English/Applied Linguistics/English Literature.  Candidates should be leaders in the field with the capacity to produce high quality scholarly output, design innovative courses, and mentor younger staff, and to contribute to the Department’s administration as appropriate.  The Department has considerable strengths in the areas of applied linguistics, business and professional communication, English for specific purposes, digital literacies, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, and the teaching of writing, but would also welcome outstanding researchers in other fields.  Successful candidates would have the opportunity to contribute to research initiatives in these and complementary fields, and to join a team of highly productive and motivated scholars.

Associate Professor :
A PhD in English/Applied Linguistics/English Literature or related disciplines.  Candidates should demonstrate the capacity to produce high quality scholarly output and be able to design innovative courses. Experience in working with Asian students is desirable.  The Department is interested in mid-career scholars with ambitious research agendas and creative ideas for teaching and course development who are interested in working in a department with a worldwide reputation in English studies.  The post offers significant opportunities for career development including strong support for research and conference attendance, and opportunities for collaboration with eminent scholars in the field.

Salary and Conditions of Service

Remuneration package will be driven by market competitiveness and individual performance.  Excellent fringe benefits include gratuity, leave, medical and dental schemes, and relocation assistance (where applicable).  Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract.
