Dr Chak Kwong CHENG (Andy), a RGC Postdoctoral Fellow in HUANG Yu’s laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, City University of Hong Kong, received an Outstanding Presentation Award (Best Oral Award) at the 10th Biennial Meeting of Society for Free Radical Research-Asia which was held on 4–6 November 2022 at Seoul National University, South Korea. Dr Cheng presented his study on the role of uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2), a key mitochondrial antioxidant protein, by revealing that UCP2 is a novel mechanosensitive gene under the control of fluid shear stress and KLF2 in endothelial cells. The UCP2 expression is critical for endothelial proinflammatory response and atherogenesis. Strategies enhancing UCP2 level may have therapeutic potential to suppress atherogenesis. This piece of study was recently published by Circulation Research on 19 August 2022 with Dr Cheng being the co-first author.

The 3-day conference was an academic festival highlighting the latest scientific advancement in the areas of redox biology and chemistry. Please browse the conference website for more information.

Warmest congradulations from BMS on Andy’s achievement!
