Prof. Jin SHANG
Prof. Jin Shang is a tenured Associate Professor leading the Gas Adsorption and Separation Lab in the School of Energy and Environment at the City University of Hong Kong. He did his PhD in Chemical Engineering at the University of Melbourne and postdoc worked at the University of Melbourne and Georgia Institute of Technology. He discovered a new gas separation mechanism, i.e., the molecular trapdoor mechanism, which has been recognized as the 4th mechanism for adsorptive gas separation. Prof. Shang specializes in molecular adsorption, separation, catalysis, storage, and sensing using porous materials such as zeolites and metal-organic frameworks. Jin Shang's group is focused on understanding the fundamental physical chemistry of the molecular adsorption process via combined experimental and computational methods, in order to engineer designer adsorbents and advance the adsorption science underpinning separation, catalysis, sensing, and storage. The research is aimed at solving problems in the environment and energy field, including carbon capture and utilization, methane purification from natural gas/biogas/landfill gas, nitrogen oxides removal and abatement, volatile organic compounds removal, and energy gas storage, etc. Prof. Shang has published over 130 papers (h-index 53, citations > 8100, as of August 2025) in journals such as Nature Communications, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Angewandte Chemie, Chemical Science, Advanced Science, Advanced Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, ACS Nano, Nano Letters, Chemical Communications, Chemical Engineering Journal, Environmental Science & Technology, Green Chemistry, etc.
Research Interest
Molecular separation is pivotal to energy and environmental technologies. Key examples include H₂ and CH₄ purification, CO₂ capture, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) removal, CO removal for fuel cells, flue gas purification, and desulfurization of natural gas and transport fuels. In the chemical industry, molecular separation is a critical unit operation, contributing to more than 60% of the total cost in certain processes.
Our research focuses on investigating and understanding the fundamental physical chemistry of gas adsorption and diffusion to enable highly selective adsorption of targeted components in given gas mixtures. We employ integrated experimental and computational approaches to rationally design and develop “active” porous materials for gas separation and storage in energy and environmental applications. Advanced experimental techniques include multicomponent breakthrough studies, in situ synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, neutron powder diffraction, and in situ FTIR/DRIFTS for probing adsorption processes. On the computational side, we employ ab initio density functional theory (DFT) and force field-based molecular simulations.
We are particularly interested in stimuli-responsive porous adsorbents that enable controlled and selective guest admission through “smart” pore apertures. Stimuli under investigation include guest molecules, temperature, pressure, light, and electric fields. Targeted applications of interest include:
- CO2 capture (including direct air capture or DAC)
- low temperature NOx removal
- natural gas/biogas/landfill gas purification
- VOCs (volatile organic compounds) removal
- NH3 removal
- paraffin/olefin separation
- noble gas separation
- gas storage
- adsorptive gas separation
- adsorption-enhanced (photo)catalytic conversion
- porous materials
