Quick view of Decarbonization & ESG Strategies of a Hong Kong Developer (Sun Hung Kai Properties)
As Decarbonization and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles continue to reshape the built environment, the School of Energy and Environment (SEE) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) hosted a guest lecture titled “ESG Trends and Opportunities in Built Environment” in SEE6128 Renewable and Sustainable Energy. The lecture featured guest speaker Ir Garrick Sze and Mr. Jacky Wong, Project Director and Assistant Project Manager at Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) in Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd. (SHKP), one of the largest developers in Hong Kong and China. Ir Sze is also the Director of BEAM Society Limited, and Panel Advisor to EMSD Best Practice for Operation and Maintenance. This guest lecture, moderated by Prof. Carol Sze Ki LIN at SEE, with our MSc students, who are eager to explore the evolving the Decarbonization and ESG landscape in buildings and infrastructure in Hong Kong.
Ir Garrick Sze shared practical insights on SHKP’s Strategy for Decarbonization. He provided examples of challenges, Government Incentives, Green Fund and Certificate. Through case studies and real-world applications, i.e. Green Building Construction Projects including Sai Sha and The Millennity at Kwun Tong, as well as Energy saving sharing in existing buildings such as Grand Century Place (MOKO) with advanced energy saving measure Internet of Things (IoT) controls. In summary, Ir Sze and Mr. Wong demonstrated how advanced energy saving technologies can lead to measurable improvements in environmental performance for residential development, shopping malls and commercial offices as well as various sizeable landmark buildings in Hong Kong.

The guest lecture underscored the growing role of Decarbonization and ESG in driving innovation across the built environment. Discussions ranged from BEAM Plus Certification, Code of Practice for Energy Efficiency of Building Services Installation to waste reduction and smart technologies. Attendees gained a deeper understanding of how Smart and Green Technology can be a catalyst for sustainable growth and community well-being. At the conclusion of the guest lecture, Prof. Carol Lin presented a souvenir to Ir Sze and Mr. Wong in appreciation of their valuable insights and meaningful contribution to this guest lecture.
