SEE PhD Graduate Dr. Lisa Sun Appointed Assistant Professor at University of Birmingham

The School of Energy and Environment (SEE) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) is proud to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Dr. Lisa Sun, a PhD graduate from Prof. Jin Shang’s research group, who has been appointed Assistant Professor at the University of Birmingham, ranked 79th globally in the QS World University Rankings, effective from 1 October 2025.
Dr. Sun’s journey with SEE began in 2016 as a Research Assistant, where she played a pivotal role in establishing the Gas Adsorption and Separation Laboratory. Her dedication and hands-on contributions were instrumental in building the group’s research infrastructure, laying the foundation for her future success.

During her PhD studies (2017–2020), Dr. Sun distinguished herself through academic excellence and leadership. She was selected as the sole representative of CityUHK to attend the Global Young Scientist Summit (2020) and was honored as the Graduate Representative of SEE (2021), a testament to her exceptional achievements and service.

Following her PhD, Dr. Sun remained actively engaged in research within Prof. Shang’s group while expanding her professional experience through collaborations with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. In 2023, she joined Surface Measurement Systems (London), a global leader in adsorption and separation instrumentation. After a brief research stint at Imperial College London in 2025, she achieved her long-held aspiration of joining the faculty at a top-tier university.
Dr. Sun’s inspiring journey from CityUHK to Birmingham exemplifies SEE’s commitment to nurturing world-class researchers who thrive in both academia and industry. The School extends its warmest congratulations to Dr. Sun and looks forward to her continued success on the international stage.
