Cultural and Language Immersion Scheme (CALIS)
The Cultural and Language Immersion Scheme (CALIS) is an institutional project that supports non-local learning programmes for undergraduate students to develop a global outlook and improve foreign language skills. Participating students will engage in a foreign language speaking environment for 28 consecutive days or more with financial support from the university. In the past years, CALIS participants have set foot in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, etc.

In collaboration with premier universities across the globe, CALIS programmes include a series of learning activities with the following major components:

  • Intensive classes at partner universities focusing on foreign language skills and cross-cultural awareness enhancement;
  • Interactions with local communities through various volunteer work projects, cultural activities, and excursions; and
  • Homestay arrangement at local host families for first-hand experiences in foreign culture and lifestyles.

CALIS contributes to participants' development through the above learning activities, including improving foreign language skills and intercultural awareness. These learning outcomes, in turn, better equip participants for challenges in different stages of life and enhance their employability.

Since its establishment in the academic year of 2007/2008, CALIS has been well-received by participating students, partner institutions, and across the university. Participants complimented CALIS as a valuable learning experience and one of the highlights in their university life.
