About the Office

The Office of the Vice-President (Research) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) oversees its associated offices to drive research excellence, support strategic initiatives, and foster an innovative, safe, and compliant research environment. These units collectively advance interdisciplinary collaboration, support researchers to secure funding, provide essential infrastructure, and uphold the highest standards of research integrity and safety.

Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS)

The Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study gathers some of the world’s brightest minds, including Nobel Laureates and Fields Medalists, to pursue curiosity-driven, unfettered research at the frontiers of science, engineering, and technology. By appointing eminent Fellows and organising distinguished events, it enhances CityUHK’s global research profile and fosters collaboration and mentoring for researchers and scholars.

Laboratory Animal Research Unit (LARU)

The Laboratory Animal Research Unit, accredited with ISO 9001:2015, specializes in providing husbandry services and SPF-grade mice, and is equipped with state-of-the-art surgical and behavioral suites for animal research. It facilitates life science research by upholding high animal welfare standards and offers training programs designed to enhance animal research skills and promote effective animal care among users at CityUHK.

Laboratory Safety Unit (LSU)

The Laboratory Safety Unit formulates institutional policies and ensures regulatory compliance across all campus teaching and research laboratories; mandates robust risk assessments and manages biological, chemical, laser, and radiation safety programs using pioneering digital control systems; provides professional guidance on safe lab design, hazardous waste disposal, and specialized equipment certification.

Research Grants and Contracts Office (RO)

The Research Grants and Contracts Office serves as the hub for the University’s research activities. It drives research excellence by shaping policy, managing grants, and coordinating major applications. RO provides research enhancement and engagement support, facilitate industrial collaboration, coordinate ethical reviews and delivers strategic analytics for funding allocation and monitoring. As secretariat to the Research Committee, RO ensures effective governance and foster a vibrant research ecosystem.
