Dr. Zoltan SZABO

Biography

Dr Zoltan graduated from the University of Veterinary Medicine, Budapest, Hungary, in 2002. After graduation, he worked as a clinician and lecturer at the same university, became head of the Exotic Division, and coordinated studies on Exotic Animal Diseases. He later moved to the UK to further his skills and was employed by London's only exotic animal referral centre. He moved to Hong Kong in 2010, where he works at the largest exotic animal referral centre in Asia.

Dr Zoltan holds seven postgraduate degrees in exotic animal medicine from three countries. In the USA, he is a diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine and a triple-boarded diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Reptile and Amphibian Practice, Avian Practice and Exotic Companion Mammal Practice). In the UK, he is a Specialist of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) in Zoo & Wildlife Medicine and also a Fellow of the RCVS.

As founder of the Exotic Veterinary Academy, Dr Zoltan delivers practical, evidence-based resources to veterinary professionals worldwide, empowering colleagues to provide advanced care for birds, reptiles, and small mammals.

Dr Zoltan had the opportunity to do research and work as a wildlife veterinarian in nine countries on four continents. Apart from Hong Kong, the UK and Hungary, he worked at the Wildlife Institute of India; later, in South Africa, he had a project on African buffalo anaesthesia, then he worked at the Cheetah Conservation Fund in Namibia. He was the field veterinarian of the Tambopata Macaw Project in Peru. Later, he worked on an avian malaria project in the Galápagos Islands and served as a veterinarian and lecturer at the Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic. He is the co-author of books on exotic animal surgery and avian diseases, has published over twenty articles in peer-reviewed veterinary journals, and has presented dozens of lectures at veterinary conferences.
