Introducing the new Master of Veterinary Medicine (MVetMed) Programme – Launching in 2026-27

The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS) is delighted to announce the launch of the Master of Veterinary Medicine (MVetMed) – Hong Kong's first master's programme dedicated to the professional development of clinical veterinarians.
With the inaugural cohort set to commence in the 2026-27 academic year, this pioneering programme underscores VCS's continued commitment to advancing veterinary clinical science and strengthening professional training in the Asia-Pacific region. Through the MVetMed, we aim to cultivate a new generation of clinicians equipped to meet the evolving demands of modern veterinary practice with excellence, innovation, and compassion.

Professor Elliott Chiu on the vision of the MVetMed as the Programme Director:
"The MVetMed marks an important advancement in postgraduate veterinary education in Hong Kong. Our goal is to equip emerging clinicians with the analytical depth, diagnostic confidence, and evidence-based capabilities needed for modern veterinary practice. By connecting theory with clinical application and grounding training in strong problem-solving and welfare-focused principles, the programme empowers graduates to make meaningful contributions to veterinary clinical science across the region and beyond."
About the MVetMed Programme
The MVetMed is a one year, full time, English taught programme focused on Small Animal Medicine, designed for veterinary graduates who wish to strengthen their clinical reasoning, diagnostic proficiency, and evidence based practice. It provides structured training that helps students confidently bridge theory and clinical application through immersive diagnostic workups and case based learning, enabling them to demonstrate effective clinical reasoning, apply advanced diagnostic technologies to small animal cases, and communicate complex medical concepts clearly to clients and colleagues.
The programme further equips graduates with interdisciplinary skills in advanced imaging, epidemiology, and One Health, preparing them for versatile roles across clinical practice, research, and industry. With an emphasis on global veterinary standards and evidence based approaches, the MVetMed supports students in designing treatment plans aligned with current research and integrating animal welfare principles into everyday clinical decision making, empowering them to deliver high quality, welfare centred care in an evolving veterinary landscape.
Taught on our Hong Kong campus by internationally certified clinical specialists in small animal medicine and leading experts in anatomical pathology, the programme offers students exceptional access to world class expertise.

Dean Vanessa Barrs on the Strategic Strength of the MVetMed:
"The MVetMed builds on the strong foundation we have established at CityUHK and the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences as Asia's only veterinary school with dual international accreditation from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and Australasian Veterinary Boards Council. Supported by our strategic partnership with Cornell University and our commitment to One Health the MVetMed reflects our dedication to developing veterinary professionals with global perspectives, strong clinical capability, and the confidence to lead in a rapidly evolving veterinary landscape."
Looking Ahead
The launch of the MVetMed marks an exciting new chapter for CityUHK and the veterinary profession in Hong Kong. As we prepare for the programme's inaugural intake, the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences remains committed to delivering world class education, advancing clinical excellence, and supporting the growth of future clinicians who will elevate veterinary care across the region.
