Visit to Shatin Racecourse on 28 April 2018

37 students joined a field trip to visit the Shatin Racecourse on a Saturday morning, not for horse racing nor gambling, but to see their energy saving system. The Hong Kong Jockey Club has installed a district cooling system to supply chilled water to the stable for air-cooling for the horses. The students were introduced to the system through a presentation by the facility manager, describing the background of the installation and amount of energy savings. The system also has a smart optimization program that make predictions of how to select the right combination of chillers to achieve the minimum energy consumption, just like looking at the betting odd of combination of horses! The students were excited to see the actual chillers, water pumps and cooling towers. The trip ended with a special lottery, where a few students were selected to the viewing deck for the panorama view of the stable. The horses indeed live a better life than us, but they also have to work very hard to win.
