CityUHK Ranked No. 1 in Hong Kong in the Nature Index 2025 for Clean Energy Research, with SEE Leading Key Contributions

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) continues to demonstrate its leadership in global sustainability, pioneering clean energy research and advancing environmental initiatives in alignment with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In the latest Nature Index 2025 Energy Supplement, CityUHK achieved an impressive 25th place globally among the Top 200 Leading Institutions and 9th place globally among the Top 50 Rising Institutions, securing the top ranking in Hong Kong in both categories. This recognition highlights CityUHK’s commitment to SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, and its role in driving impactful, high-quality research.

The Nature Index ranks institutions based on their SDG 7-related research output published in top-tier journals such as Nature and Science between 2019 and 2024, underscoring CityUHK’s dedication to tackling global energy challenges. During this period, the university produced 564 research papers in this field, reflecting its strong academic contributions and innovation.

CityUHK places a strong emphasis on clean energy research, being the first university in Hong Kong to establish the School of Energy and Environment (SEE) and the Hong Kong Institute for Clean Energy (HKICE). SEE has been instrumental in advancing research on climate resilience, renewable energy technologies, and sustainable development, reinforcing CityUHK’s leadership in energy innovation.

Between 2019 and 2023, CityUHK faculty and researchers published over 2,900 research papers related to affordable and clean energy. Additionally, in collaboration with CLPe, the university has installed nearly 2,000 high-efficiency bifacial solar panels across 30 campus buildings, reducing carbon emissions by approximately 450 tonnes annually and further strengthening its commitment to green campus development.
