The Department, in collaboration with the Department of Engineering Physics, Tsinghua University, successfully concluded the MESH Student Summer School 2026, a 12-day immersive programme spanning Hong Kong, Daya Bay and Beijing. Bringing together 20 students from City University of Hong Kong and Tsinghua University, including three non-local participants, the programme offered a unique blend of academic learning, industry exposure and cultural exchange. Student feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with 100% of participants reporting an enhanced understanding of engineering, innovation and the nuclear energy sector, and stated that they would recommend the programme to their peers.
Through visits to leading organisations including the Hong Kong Observatory, CGN Daya Bay Nuclear Power Base, CGN Research Institute, Nuctech, and Tsinghua University's Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology (INET), students gained first-hand insight into the latest developments in nuclear technology, clean energy systems and advanced engineering applications.
One of the programme's key highlights was the opportunity to connect classroom knowledge with real-world practice. Students were particularly impressed by the scale of nuclear power operations, the industry's strong safety culture, and the diverse applications of nuclear technologies in healthcare, environmental monitoring, public safety and energy production. Many remarked that the experience broadened their perspectives on future study and career opportunities within the field.
The Summer School also fostered meaningful cross-cultural and cross-institutional exchange. Through interactions with students and academics from Tsinghua University, participants developed new friendships, expanded their professional networks and gained valuable insights into different academic and cultural perspectives. The presence of three non-local students further enriched the international learning environment.
Beyond technical learning, students explored China's rich cultural heritage through visits to iconic landmarks such as the Palace Museum and the Great Wall, creating a well-rounded experience that combined engineering, innovation and cultural appreciation.
With overwhelmingly positive feedback and lasting impacts on students' academic, professional and personal development, the MESH Student Summer School 2026 successfully demonstrated the value of experiential learning, industry engagement and international collaboration. The Department looks forward to continuing this flagship initiative and inspiring future generations of engineers and innovators.
