Frequently asked questions

Overseas Students
Q. Can I apply if I am not a Hong Kong resident and will I need a visa?
A. Yes, you can apply. However, we do not have a residential accommodation option in 2026 so you will have to arrange your own accommodation during the programme. You will not need a visa. You should enter Hong Kong as a ‘visitor’.

Accommodation
Q. Is there an accommodation option?
A. No, unfortunately there is no arranged accommodation for the 2026 programme.

Subjects I need to be studying in school
Q. Do I need to be studying Chemistry, Biology and Maths?
A. Yes, as most veterinary programmes, including our own BVM programme, require these subjects, you should be currently studying these subjects at school.

Eligibility
Q. If I have not yet started the final two years of high school by the time the VIP begins am I eligible to join?
A. As long as you are about to enter the final two years of high school in September of the year of the VIP programme (i.e. September 2026), you are eligible (pls note Min Age is 15). This means that you can apply for the summer programme before you start studying the final two years.
Examples:
    1. In September 2026, I will begin my Form 5/6 in a local DSE school   Eligible
    2. In September 2026, I will begin my year 12/13 in an IB school that goes up to year 13   Eligible

    4. In September 2026, I will begin my year 12/13 in a GCE A Level school   Eligible

Vaccinations
Q. Do I need specific vaccinations for the programme?
A. Yes, for your own protection, we need you to be up to date for influenza (within the last 12 months) and tetanus (within the last 10 years). Rabies vaccination is not required.

What do I need to bring?
Q. Do I need to bring a spare set of clothes during the 2nd week when we are handling animals?
A. We will be providing protective clothing during those attachments but it is possible that your clothes will get dirty so a spare t-shirt is a good idea to pack. We will be sending all successful applicants a more comprehensive list of things to bring before the programme begins.

Participation
Q. Do I need to participate in all of the animal husbandry attachments?
A. Yes, the programme is designed to give you a broad exposure to the species of animals you will encounter during a veterinary degree. This is for your benefit in not only learning animal handling skills but also allowing you to confirm that a veterinary degree is suitable for you. It’s better to know early if handling animals is not for you!

Certificate
Q. Will I get a certificate of attendance at the end of the programme?
A. Yes, all participants who complete the programme will receive a certificate of attendance (please refer to Attendance and Punctuality Policy).

Application to CityUHK BVM Programme
Q. Does the Veterinary Immersive Programme give me an advantage in applying for CityU’s BVM programme?
A. Completing the VIP will provide you a very comprehensive overview of the veterinary profession and allow you to develop some animal handling skills. This will prepare you well when you apply to any veterinary degree programme, including CityUHK’s.
