Deployment of Microsoft Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10 Devices
Microsoft has announced that official support for the Windows 10 operating system will conclude on 14 October 2025. Following this date, Windows 10 devices will no longer receive routine security updates from Microsoft, which may expose the systems to increased security risks.
Implementation of Extended Security Updates (ESU)
To safeguard our computing environment and to provide an additional year for hardware upgrades or replacements, the Computing Services Centre (CSC) will implement Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) for University-owned Windows 10 computers. The ESU will ensure the continued delivery of security patches for one year until 13 October 2026, following the cessation of standard support.
How to Deploy?
Before the ESU can be applied successfully, the Windows 10 system must be at its latest version. Please refer to this Microsoft link to check whether a Windows 10 system is up-to-date. There are two categories:
- Domain-Joined Computers: For computers that have joined the CityUHK domain, if it is the latest version of the Windows 10 system, no further action is required, as the ESU will be automatically installed via a logon script upon system restart after 14 October 2025. If it is not, users are required to submit a CSC Work Request for the IT team to provide assistance.
- Non-Domain Computers: For computers that have not joined the CityUHK domain, users are required to submit a CSC Work Request for individual installation of the ESU by the IT team.
Recommended Actions
All users’ operating devices that do not meet the hardware specifications for Windows 11 are strongly encouraged to utilize this extension period to plan for and execute necessary upgrades or system replacements. The continued security of our computing resources remains a top institutional priority.
