MUKHAMETKHAN Nurdana
Engineering perspectives, global experiences
Our Kazakh student MUKHAMETKHAN Nurdana (Bachelor of Engineering – Computer and Data Engineering) broadened her horizons at George Mason University – embracing dynamic classes, vibrant campus life, and cultural exploration in Washington, D.C.
My semester as an international exchange student at George Mason University was one of the most rewarding experiences of my academic life. Coming from Hong Kong, I was initially nervous about adapting to a new country, but GMU made the transition smooth and welcoming.
The campus in Fairfax is modern, spacious, and full of energy, with diverse students from all over the world. I felt included right away – professors were approachable and encouraging, classes were engaging with real-world focus, and I appreciated the balance between academics and exploration️. Being so close to Washington, D.C. was a huge plus; I visited museums, monuments, and events that deepened my understanding of American culture and politics.
Living in on-campus housing helped me build friendships quickly – many with other international students and locals. We shared meals️, studied together, and explored nearby areas. The support from the Office of International Programs and Services (OIPS) was excellent; they guided me through paperwork, orientation, and any issues I encountered.
Academically, the courses challenged me in positive ways and broadened my perspective. I grew more independent, confident, and open-minded. The Aetna health insurance I paid for gave me peace of mind during my stay.
Overall, this exchange at GMU pushed me out of my comfort zone and gave me lifelong memories, strong connections, and skills I'll carry forward. I highly recommend it to any student seeking a meaningful international experience.
