Tampere University

New country, new insights, new connections!

KUN Ling Yee Elaine (Bachelor of Social Sciences - Criminology and Sociology) experienced an enriching exchange journey at Tampere University in Finland.

Tampere is an impressive city that attracts both local and international students, so it is widely known as a “student city” in Finland. The population in Tampere is relatively young because of the huge number of students. One of the most memorable aspects of my exchange was Finland’s strong reading culture. Whether in libraries, on buses, or on trains, it is common to see people immersed in books, both fiction and non-fiction. This environment inspired me deeply.

Academically, the biggest difference between studying in Hong Kong and Finland is the strong emphasis on self-learning. Sometimes students have the option of self-studying during the course registration stage, and the college provides enough freedom for everyone to learn at their own pace. Students are required to prepare readings or videos before each lesson, and classes are highly interactive and discussion-based rather than lecture-oriented. I gained valuable experience sharing ideas with classmates from diverse cultural backgrounds. Although attendance is not compulsory, Finnish students actively participate, and classrooms are always full. They have a huge passion for learning.

Beyond academics, the people in Tampere left the deepest impression on me. They are consistently kind, friendly, and polite. On my first day, while struggling with heavy luggage on the train, a local immediately helped me without hesitation. At that moment, it made me feel warmly welcomed. Also, some simple gestures like greeting bus drivers and holding doors for others reflect their thoughtful culture.

This exchange experience has inspired me to build a habit of learning through reading and to carry forward the warmth and politeness I encountered in Finland.
