Third CityUHK Experiential Camp broadens secondary students’ perspectives through interdisciplinary learning
City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) welcomed over 100 senior secondary students from 49 schools to the CityUHK Experiential Camp 2026, a two-day, one-night programme that provided students with opportunities to explore different fields of knowledge, experience university life and broaden their perspectives through interdisciplinary activities.
Now in its third year, the Camp featured workshops, laboratory and exhibition visits, interactive sessions and team challenges, with the newly opened Hu Fa Kuang Sports Centre providing a dynamic setting for group activities. Together, these experiences encouraged students to explore new interests and engage with different disciplines beyond their regular school curriculum.
Professor Chan Chi-hou, Vice-President (Community Engagement) of CityUHK, welcomed the students at the opening ceremony and encouraged them to embrace new experiences and remain open to different possibilities. “University education is not only about learning in the classroom. It is also about exploring new interests, connecting with different people, and developing a better understanding of oneself,” Professor Chan said.
A defining feature of the CityUHK Experiential Camp is its interdisciplinary approach, which brings together learning experiences from different fields. This year, students took part in workshops on building radar systems, investigating biomedical case involving the possible causes of diseases, fabricating hand cream, and exploring creative photography and visual storytelling. Laboratory and exhibition visits also introduced them to diverse areas of research, innovation, art and culture.
Students also attended a guest talk, “Starting Your University Journey”, delivered by Mr Fred Wu, Manager (Corporate Partnerships and Career Development) at the College of Engineering and a CityUHK alumnus. Drawing on his own experiences, Mr Wu shared how students could make the transition to university, make the most of the opportunities available and explore their interests beyond the classroom.
Through group activities, students connected with peers from different schools and developed their communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills.
The Camp concluded with closing remarks by Professor Steve Wong Hang, Associate Vice-President (Community Engagement), who encouraged students to continue exploring their interests and choose paths that they genuinely enjoy. “Take the time to explore different interests and discover what you truly enjoy. You do not need to have all the answers now. What matters is finding a path that is right for you,” Professor Wong said.
The Camp received encouraging feedback, with over 90% of respondents rating the overall programme positively. The response reflected the value of providing secondary students with opportunities to explore diverse fields, connect with the University community and broaden their perspectives through an immersive campus experience.
Through the Experiential Camp, CityUHK continues to create opportunities for young people to explore their interests, develop new perspectives and discover possibilities for their future learning journeys.
