CityUHK empowers educators with AI insights at TWGHs S. C. Gaw Memorial College Teachers Development Day

08 January 2026

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) welcomed Principal Jack Wong and 60 teachers from TWGHs S. C. Gaw Memorial College for an inspiring Teachers Development Day held on 7 January 2026. The programme centred on AI in education, and ways to equip teachers for the evolving needs of students in a technology-driven era.

The event opened with warm welcome remarks delivered by Professor Chan Chi Hou, Vice-President (Community Engagement). In his address, Professor Chan stressed the shared responsibility across different sectors to keep pace with rapid change. He remarked that whether in universities, secondary schools, or start-up enterprises, everyone must move forward with the times. Only through persistent innovation, he emphasised, can we collectively nurture a new generation equipped with global competitiveness and bring fresh vitality to society.

After the welcome, the afternoon continued with a comprehensive admission talk that introduced CityUHK’s wide range of undergraduate programmes, scholarships, and student life, helping teachers gain a clearer picture to better guide their own students toward future studies.

The programme then shifted to focused sessions on artificial intelligence and its growing role in education. Mr Roland Leung, Founder of Datality Lab—a HK Tech 300 start-up developing an AI training platform specially designed to strengthen communication skills—demonstrated how such innovative tools can support students in building stronger presentation and interpersonal abilities.

This was followed by a thought-provoking talk from Professor Clint Ho, Associate Head of the Department of Data Science, titled “AI is everywhere, but… what is ‘AI’?”. Professor Ho clarified core concepts of artificial intelligence and discussed its real-world applications in a clear and accessible way.

The day concluded with a session led by Professor Condon Lau from the Department of Physics on “Generative AI for Teaching and Learning of Mathematics”. Professor Lau explored how generative AI tools can be harnessed to support learning experiences, and help students achieve deeper conceptual understanding.

Through this collaborative Teachers Development Day, CityUHK reaffirmed its dedication to partnering with secondary schools and empowering educators with forward-looking knowledge in artificial intelligence and educational innovation. By connecting academia, industry start-ups, and frontline teachers, the event sought to better prepare secondary educators to inspire and equip their students for success in a fast-changing world.
