Celebrating Mother’s Day in Sham Shui Po: Youth Energy and Community Synergy

The signature community event " Sham Shui Po Hea " series returned to Sham Shui Po on Mother’s Day, delivering the most heartfelt and warm festive blessings to tireless mothers and local residents. Jointly organised by the Sham Shui Po Kaifong Welfare Advancement Association and the Community Involvement and Culture, Recreation and Sports Committee of the Sham Shui Po District Council, the event was graced by the presence of Mr Oscar Wong, JP, the District Officer (Sham Shui Po), alongside several District Council members. They interacted warmly with the residents, enjoyed the spectacular performances together, and shared a joyful Mother's Day filled with love and laughter.
In addition to the handmade balloon flower workshops, family game zones, and dedicated photo spots, a major highlight of this year's event was the street busking performances by student teams from City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), who were specially invited to the venue. A stellar lineup of four performing groups took the stage in rotation, showcasing the diverse musical talents and cross-team collaboration of CityUHK students. The Student Residence Office (SRO) dispatched their talented SR Music Ambassadors, who delivered a series of mesmerising and beautifully rendered songs. The Student Development Services (SDS) arranged for singing competition champion Zhang Tianyi to lead the CityUHK iLand band, featuring students Sun Yifan, Chui Kot Yan, and Tsang Kin Shing, in performing a variety of touching melodies. Non-local student Elisabeth Felicia Adriani seamlessly blended Eastern and Western cultures with her wonderful rendition of classic Chinese and English pop songs, while Law Sin Yan (Summer) and Yau Sheung Ching (Sunny) demonstrated perfect chemistry through a refreshing duet performance.
Each group of students poured their hearts into every song, filling every corner of Ki Lung Street with beautiful vocals that ranged from warm, lyrical folk classics to upbeat, soaring melodies. The captivating power of music instantly dissolved the boundaries of the stage; local residents and community guests not only stopped to appreciate the music and wave along but also enthusiastically requested songs on the spot. With smiles of pure delight on the faces of both adults and children, the afternoon fully demonstrated the unique power of music to bring a community together.
Behind the scenes of these wonderful performances was the full support of on-site CityUHK student helpers. Demonstrating exceptional professionalism, they efficiently coordinated every segment of the event and served as the emcees, successfully driving the energetic atmosphere. This community collaboration not only provided a valuable platform for CityUHK students to step into the neighbourhood and showcase their talents but also injected a rare youthful vitality into this traditional district, successfully bridging generational gaps and fostering deeper social inclusion.
