LSU announced the launch of FIVE safety policies and guidelines as listed below, with effective from 14 Jan 2022: Policy on eyesight testing for users of class 3B and 4 lasers; Chemical Safety Guidelines; Laser Safety Guidelines; Radiation Safety Guidelines; and General Laboratory Safety Guidelines. The above policies and guidelines have been approved by the University Laboratory Safety Committee and Safety and Health Committee. These relevant documents are also available on the LSU website.

Please note that the University’s “Safety Policy” and “University Policy on 2-tier Safety Check” have been revised and posted on FMO website under Safety and Health Information. With reference to the University Policy on 2-tier Safety Check, Departmental Safety Officers / Representatives are required to carry out safety checks for their Departments / Offices / Centres on a half-yearly basis. Reports should be submitted to Head of Department / Office / Centre for improvement actions, and also to the Senior Safety and Administration Manager of FMO. It is only one week into the new semester and there are already two injury cases involving chemicals splashing into eyes. Both are experiment-related and allegedly in each case the injured was not wearing safety goggles when the incident happened. Please help remind all staff and students to wear proper PPE in labs. In particular, safety goggles are required for chemical labs. In addition, FMO has launched the online safety training on Canvas. Please urge all staff and students to complete the training if they have not done so. Timely reporting and thorough investigation of incidents or accidents are critical to preventing repeat occurrences. An accident is an unplanned event that causes personal injury or property damage. A “near miss” is an event that could have caused personal injury, danger to health, and/or property damage or the environment. In the event of an accident, incident or exposure, the injured or exposed person's supervisor should complete and submit the "Injury / Accident / Near Miss Report". The new policy was discussed and endorsed in the 3rd University Laboratory Safety Committee Meeting held on 7 January 2021 and in the 33rd Safety and Health Committee Meeting held on 10 February 2021.
