TONG Kai Kwan

Radboud University Nijmegen

Biomedical Engineering student TONG Kai Kwan embarked on an exciting exchange semester at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherland.

Over the past six months, I had the incredible opportunity to live at Boeckstaetehof in Nijmegen, a charming city on the southeastern border of the Netherlands 🇳🇱. This exchange marked my first visit to Europe, and spending a semester abroad had always been at the top of my bucket list since my admission to CityUHK. I am truly grateful that my dream came true — thanks to the encouragement and support of my teachers, department, and the institution.

The first month after arriving was certainly an adjustment period. Life there wasn’t exactly as I had imagined — the academic workload was demanding, the dining culture was new, and my social circle  had yet to form. But as I settled in, I began to embrace the challenges and see them as opportunities to grow. Life moves forward, and so did I. Over time, I came to admire how Dutch students balance competitiveness with collaboration. I kept up with my daily meal plan, explored the local lifestyle, and most importantly, built wonderful friendships with my roommates. One of my most unforgettable memories was our trip to Tromsø, Norway 🇳🇴 — a true once-in-a-lifetime experience.

At one point, I realized that every challenge I faced had shaped me into someone more adaptable, independent, and open-minded — exactly what I had hoped for when I clicked the “Apply” button for the exchange programme.

To those who are still considering whether to study abroad: it will become one of the most rewarding and unforgettable chapters of your university life — and perhaps your entire journey. Say yes to new experiences, step outside your comfort zone, and embrace every moment. You’ll never forget the magic of exchange life — it’s truly an adventure like no other!
