SO Yi Yan

University of Reading

SO Yi Yan (Bachelor of Arts) explored new horizons during her exchange semester at the University of Reading, UK.

My exchange experience was undoubtedly one of the most fruitful and memorable periods of my life. Thanks to the University of Reading’s strong support and its action-packed Welcome Week, which included a school trip to Bath, I was able to quickly adapt to life in the UK. Their warm hospitality also helped me feel comfortable chatting with new people. The locals I met were friendly and had a great sense of humour.

During this study abroad period, I met many exchange students from across different continents — including France 🇫🇷, Réunion Island , and Canada — and I hope our friendships will last a lifetime. Conversing with them not only helped improve my English speaking skills through countless opportunities for practice that I wouldn’t easily have in Hong Kong, but also boosted my overall confidence in socialising with foreigners.

While attending the university’s courses, I saw firsthand how passionate the professors were about the subjects they taught. The knowledge I gained from these courses broadened my perspectives on a global level.

Beyond academic work, I travelled to eight countries and explored numerous cities and towns in the UK, such as Manchester  and Edinburgh, which deepened my understanding of British culture and history. Overall, my semester at the University of Reading was one of the most enriching and incredible experiences I’ve ever had — an unforgettable memory I will cherish forever.
