Turning data into discovery across the globe!
Rhys David Miranda (Bachelor of Science - Data and Systems Engineering) gained global insights during his exchange semester at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.
My exchange in New Zealand fulfilled my goals of personal growth, embracing new experiences , and building meaningful connections — yet its true value lay in the unexpected lessons along the way. Stepping into autonomous adulthood for the first time, from managing daily routines to preparing my own meals, laid a strong foundation of self-sufficiency. I gradually transformed from a student abroad into someone capable of building a life in a new environment.
This independence was complemented by a vibrant surrogate family formed through university friendships. Shared meals and activities became sources of deep support, and cooking evolved from a daily task into an act of cultural exchange and care. Academically, I chose curiosity over specialisation, exploring fields such as Astronomyand Psychology. This reignited a sense of wonder — measured not only by grades, but through stargazing trips and thoughtful conversations.
As an explorer, I organised journeys to breathtaking landscapes, where the strongest connections were forged in quiet moments beneath vast skies. Over time, the line between “home” and “away” began to fade. I left with strengthened self-confidence, a global network of friends and a renewed curiosity — proof that the greatest growth often comes from the beautiful challenge of finding your place in new territory.
