Concerns

The concern has been forwarded to the Computing Services Centre (CSC).

The e-Learning Team sources tools worldwide to satisfy the needs in teaching and learning at CityU. After feature testing and review of security, tools are piloted by teachers and students in course environment. Based on user feedback and usage data, the senior management at the university will decide on the adoption of a particular e-learning tool.

To maintain information security and privacy, computers on the CityU wired network will be locked automatically after 10 minutes of idling. Re-login is required to unlock the computer.

Please also note that a Canvas session will timeout after idling of 3 hours for any user.

CityU Portal will be redesigned soon and single-sign-on feature will be introduced for certain systems.

Please ask your teacher to request the Computing Services Centre (CSC) to install the required software on the network.

The concern has also been forwarded to the CSC.

The concern has been forwarded to the Enterprise Solutions Office (ESU).

Suggestions

Suggestions to be handled by the e-Learning Team

Promoting the use of Canvas for teaching and learning is the duty of the e-Learning Team. We take every opportunity in relevant events organized by various departments and offices to reach out to CityU teachers.

Canvas workshops are provided to teachers before the start of every semester. They cover basic tools (Jump Start), plagiarism prevention (with the use of Turnitin), and online assessments. There is also a self-access online training course inside Canvas at https://canvas.cityu.edu.hk/enroll/P6WMND for CityU teachers.

As a student user, you may hide grades shown in the Canvas Dashboard. First, locate the menu button with three vertical dots on the far right of the title “Dashboard”. Click on it and then select "List View" will hide "Recent Feedback" from the Dashboard.

The e-Learning Team is trying to provide more user accounts of Grammarly Premium to CityU users where a plagiarism checker is included.

Research students may ask your supervisor to request RO (Research Grants & Contracts Office, https://www.cityu.edu.hk/ro/) for an iThenticate user account to scan your papers and proposals for similarity.

Canvas is mainly a teacher-led platform for teaching and learning activities. Hence, the focus of the e-Learning Team is on promotional effort to CityU teachers.

Currently, no Canvas workshop is run for students unless requested by an academic unit. Nevertheless, students can search for step-by-step instructions online at https://community.canvaslms.com/community/answers/guides/

Such functionality is available to users in Canvas. Please see the following link for details.

A students may tune his/her personal preference to receive notifications when new files are uploaded by teachers. Please check out the link below for details.

Panopto has been introduced to facilitate lecture video recording and viewing as a pilot. Please ask your teachers to contact the e-Learning Team for details.

The feedback has been forwarded to the vendor. Nevertheless, Turnitin will always have weaknesses, so we rely on the professional judgement of teachers to make decisions.

Canvas sites have been built for purposes other than teaching and learning. For example, there is a Canvas site for communication at HSBC Prosperity Hall (Hall 2). Please ask the staff member supervising the activity to contact the e-Learning Team directly for a Canvas site.

The e-Learning Team is trying to make Grammarly Premium available to more CityU users.

Suggestions to be handled by CityU teachers

A new tool named Panopto is being trialed to simplify instructional video production. Both lecture recording and webcast (live cast) are supported. Please ask your teachers to contact the e-Learning Team for details.

Although 'Files' is the most used commonly tool within Canvas, there are other features to support teaching and learning. Teachers are welcome to contact the e-Learning Team to explore further use of Canvas.

Canvas quizzes can easily facilitate practice tests with grades and feedback. The colleagues in the Office of Education Development & Gateway Education (EDGE) and the e-Learning Team are constantly promoting the use of online quizzes for various purposes including practices. Please ask your teachers to contact us for support.

Teachers are recommended to accept resubmission in Turnitin Assignments. Grammarly Premium is also available to facilitate self-checking on plagiarism.

Teachers are recommended to collect essay type submissions via Turnitin as much as possible to prevent plagiarism. Nevertheless, Turnitin does not perform well for PowerPoint or Excel files and it does not work on images or audio at all. Please ask your teachers to contact us if they encounter any technical difficulty in using Turnitin.
