CityU Musical 2020/21 — RENT

Guided by a professional theatre director, the very first rehearsal of the CityU Musical 2020/21 was commenced in late 2020 eventually, despite the 6-month wait and postponement due to the pandemic.

The musical of this year, RENT, is a real challenge to the 23 young actors, with a list of 46 songs in a row and the sophisticated theme storying the human struggle for existence. “It is hard to imagine in a slum in New York City, a place full of crimes, sickness and poverty, how desperate and powerless people living there are. Only by diving deep into the characters' mind can we get a glimpse of their experience and convey to the audience faithfully,” said one of the cast members, Lai Chin Ching, Emily.

Despite the challenges, Emily is thrilled to be part of the overwhelming production. “Even though we have to wear masks at the rehearsals, it is still very enjoyable and rewarding. It is fun learning the musical and discussing the details of the musical with my cast members.”

With the uncertain situation of the pandemic which brings unprecedented challenges such as suspension of rehearsal, Emily and other cast members have experienced moments of frustration and worried that the performance will have to be suspended or even cancelled. Still, all the cast members continue to practise at home and are fully prepared for the show.

The CityU Musical is scheduled from 25 to 28 March 2021. If you would like to witness the talents and transformation of the CityU students, please stay tuned with the Cultural and Sports Committee!
