Bridging Worlds: Exploring the Future of Professional Communication

LSPPC8 international conference seeks to create space for meaningful dialogue across boundaries

The CLASS Department of English hosts LSPPC8, bringing together academics and professionals to explore collaboration, innovation and impact in a rapidly evolving communication landscape.

In December 2025, Hong Kong became a vibrant meeting point for ideas, innovation and international collaboration as the Department of English (EN) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) hosted the 8th International Conference of the Asia-Pacific Languages for Specific Purposes & Professional Communication Association (LSPPC8).

Held from 11 to 13 December, the conference brought together scholars, educators, students and industry professionals under a timely and thought-provoking theme: Collaboration, Innovation, and Impact: Bridging Academic and Professional Worlds.

The theme resonated strongly in a year defined by rapid technological change. As generative artificial intelligence continues to reshape how we research, write and interact, and as social media remains deeply embedded in professional life, the landscape of communication is evolving at unprecedented speed.

The conference description captured this urgency, noting the “growing complexity in the social context of Languages for Specific Purposes and Professional Communication practices”. Against this backdrop, LSPPC8 set out to create space for meaningful dialogue across boundaries.

Central to the discussions was the idea that today’s most pressing challenges cannot be solved in isolation. From environmental crises to public health concerns and social inequality, so-called “wicked problems” demand collaborative and innovative responses.

As the conference theme emphasised, effective communication plays a decisive role in determining whether solutions can be found. Indeed, the organisers highlighted that “to engage with these issues, collaboration and innovation is essential”.

Over three days, participants explored how academia and industry can work more closely together to generate real-world impact. The conference provided a platform not only for presenting research but also for identifying synergies and building partnerships. With an international scientific committee featuring leading scholars from Asia, Europe, Australia and North America, the event reflected the global scope of professional communication research today.

Co-chaired by Professor Christoph HAFNER, President of the Asia-Pacific LSPPC Association, and Professor Esterina NERVINO, Outreach Officer of the Association, the conference demonstrated CityUHK’s strong commitment to fostering international exchange and advancing professional communication studies.

By its conclusion, LSPPC8 had achieved more than an exchange of ideas, and it reinforced a powerful message: in a rapidly transforming world, bridging academic insight and professional practice is not merely desirable—it is imperative for innovation and lasting impact.
