Among the recipients of the Top 10 Outstanding Tertiary Students Award of Hong Kong 2024, Derek CHAN King-lam from the Department of Public and International Affairs (PIA) at the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) stands out for his dedication to youth services. Graduating with a major in Public Policy and Politics, Chan shifted his focus to public service after discovering his true interests during an internship. He has actively participated in youth service initiatives, serving as president of the Hong Kong Student Network Alliance. Last July, he led a delegation to Beijing to gain insights into national development.

Chan’s experiences have honed his problem-solving skills, enabling him to navigate interpersonal and administrative challenges effectively. He has assisted the Hong Kong United Youth Association in cooperating with Bloomberg and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority to nurture fintech talent in the Greater Bay Area. Chan’s role as emcee at the flag-raising ceremony celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the People’s Republic of China further highlights his commitment to community engagement.

Chan said that he felt extremely honoured to receive this award and was delighted that his commitment to youth service had been recognised. “Serving society has been my goal since childhood. The award recognises my efforts in community service, which is very meaningful to me,” he said.

Chan encouraged future participants in this competition to live their university lives to the fullest, and engage in various activities to build a diverse profile. To his juniors, Chan advised them to utilise their spare time effectively, explore their interests and establish clear goals for their development.
