Prof. Jian Lu is the Dean of the College of Engineering and a Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering at City University of Hong Kong.


Prof. Lu’s research interests include surface science and engineering, the processing and mechanical properties of nanomaterials and advanced materials, experimental mechanics, and residual stress. He has published more than 562 journal papers including papers in Nature (cover story), Science, Nature Materials, Nature Chemistry, Nature Water, Nature Communications, Science Advances, Materials Today, Advanced Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, Physical Review Letters, JACS, Angewandte Chemie, Nano Letters, ACS NANO, Acta Materialia, Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids. He also holds 83 granted patents in China, Europe, and the USA (including PC4 extensions), with 51 as the first inventor and 13 as the second inventor. His publications have been cited more than 47,000 times (according to Google Scholar).

He received the French Knight of the National Order of Merit and the French Knight of the National Order of Légion d’Honneur in 2006 and 2017, respectively. Both awards were nominated by the President of the Republic of France and conferred by the French Government. In 2011, he was elected as the first Chinese-born Academician of the National Academy of Technologies of France among 300 Fellows.
