“Waste not, want not.” We have all heard this and it may sound very clichéd but the motto will surely help us save the planet. You must be wondering, “How can I – just one single person - do anything to save energy? How can changing my behaviour change the world?” But we must remember that every drop in the ocean counts.

We can save energy in numerous ways but let me just concentrate on two major Ps - Paper and Plastic. Did you know that:
- Recycling one ton of paper saves 17 trees and 7,000 gallons of water.
- If we recycled every plastic bottle we used, we would keep two billion tons of plastic out of landfills.

We can all chip in our bit by trying to use the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The SRO has been promoting a campaign to save energy for a very long time - Say ‘no’ to air-conditioning this autumn! We advise you to switch off the lights, air conditioners, ventilation fans, kitchen exhaust fans, hoods, computers and printers etc. when not in use. After all, they too need some rest! You can enjoy natural ventilation by keeping curtains drawn back and opening windows when weather permits. Sunshine and brightness will surely make your day more cheerful!

Coming back to paper and plastic reduction - did you know that there are recycling bins for the separation of domestic waste on each floor of every hall? We must separate the waste before throwing it into the garbage bins. Another trivia - Did you know that recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for 3 hours? Use recycled paper whenever possible and save the lives of trees. They too are living beings, aren’t they? When you buy take-away food at Homey Kitchen, remember the “Bring Your Own” practice for reducing the use of plates and utensils

In order to encourage residents to save energy we had the "Lights Off Moon On" Campaign for the Joint-Hall Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration, when the lights were switched off for 15 minutes and residents enjoyed the beauty of the moonlight!

See, it does make a difference when you apply the 3Rs in your daily life habits or when you organise your hall activities! We all need to come together and contribute! After all, life is energy and energy is life. Saving energy is equivalent to saving life!
