Film screening sparks reflection on animal welfare and compassion

13 February 2026

More than 400 participants gathered at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) on 12 February 2026 for the Paws Land Film Screening and Director Sharing Session, bringing together community members to reflect on animal welfare and compassion in urban life. The audience included teachers and students from primary and secondary schools, an elderly group, alongside CityUHK students, staff and alumni, creating a vibrant setting for dialogue on the relationship between animals and society.

In his opening remarks, Professor Chan Chi Hou, Vice-President (Community Engagement) highlighted that the film and the subsequent sharing would encourage participants to reflect on the situation of animals in the city from the perspective of rescuers. Professor Chan also emphasised that caring for animals is a way of caring for society and one another, and that animal welfare and social inclusion can reinforce each other.

Following the screening, Director Mr Au Cheuk Man shared insights into the making of the film, offering the audience a deeper understanding of the realities faced by rescued animals and the people who support them.

Participant engagement continued through an interactive Q&A game session, where attendees answered questions related to the film and received CityUHK souvenirs as prizes. The lively interaction reflected strong interest in the film’s themes.

The event provided a platform for participants of different generations and backgrounds to connect through film, fostering greater awareness of animal welfare while encouraging empathy and shared responsibility within the community.
