A CityUHK-led study revealed how stingrays maintain their mineralised skeletal armour's geometry as they grow. Led by Professor Mason Dean with the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, Zuse Institute Berlin and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the team found larger tesserae — tiny armour tiles — grow fastest, preserving its hexagon-dominant pattern without new tiles.
NerOcean, an HK Tech 300 start-up founded by CityUHK Chemistry graduate Dr Ng Chi-on, develops a replaceable-film photochemical sensor that monitors seawater dissolved oxygen for a low-cost 'Nerve of the Ocean' network. Built on technology developed at CityUHK under Professor Vincent Ko, it is now tested with the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department.
The School of Energy and Environment, led by Professor Edwin Tso, joined students and alumni on an eco-tour hosted by the Airport Authority Hong Kong marking the marine park's designation. Eco-talks covered cetacean ecology in Hong Kong waters, the Authority's Marine Ecology and Fisheries Enhancement Strategy, and the ecology of North Lantau Marine Park.
The Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences hosted a free exhibition featuring 30 cetacean and sea-turtle specimens and life-scale models with digital displays, raising public awareness of Hong Kong's marine biodiversity and encouraging conservation action through the One Health concept — connecting human, animal and environmental wellbeing.
