  • The Internet Access Services of Student Residence cover areas

Internet is available in all bed study rooms.
Free wireless LAN connection signals covers within hall areas like the common rooms, fitness room, skygarden, multi-function halls and cafeteria.
If resident still want to have connect to LAN port, please follow the below instructions.

  • The policies and guidelines concerning the use of computer, network and computing resources

Note as defined by Computer Services Center, at any point in time, each resident can only have one PC connected to the network port.
Please read the policies and guidelines:https://www.cityu.edu.hk/csc/deptweb/facilities/ctnet/stdresidence/appinfo.txt
CSC will stop your hostel network access services without prior notice if your computer was detected to conduct any abnormal activity.
(e.g. hacking, port scanning, spamming, DDos, Being hijacked, p2p connections, BitTorrent download, using multiple computers connection etc.)

  • How can I use the wired network in my room if my PC/notebook has only wireless adaptor?

You can use external Ethernet adapter that is readily available in the market.

  • Can I setup my own Wi-Fi router in my study-bed room to share my Internet link among various devices?

No. CSC does not allow student using a self-own router/ switch/ hub to access the Internet, and SRO does not support student setup self-own router. Connecting network device such as wireless router, switch, etc. to the network port is prohibited because
    a) It will interfere the hostel’s Wi-Fi network and induce network security problems that will affect other users / students on the same floor.
    b) Due to the high density of the study-bed rooms in the hostel environment, Wi-Fi routers will interfere each other and hence degrading the network performance, including both wired and wireless connections, and affecting everyone’s using experience.

N.B. Do not connect to Wi-Fi network not provided by CSC or SRO. It is insecure to connect to unknown Wi-Fi network and may cause data or password leakage.

You may turn your PC connected to the Hostel network into a Wi-Fi hotspot temporarily by enabling the “Internet Connection Sharing” (ICS) feature as a workaround solution. You may visit the following URL for more information in setting up the ICS:

  • Why my network access in room is blocked?

In order to safeguard the security and ensure the fair of use of Internet resources to all CityU users; the access to the Hostel network will be blocked under some conditions, for example,

    1.   Virus or vulnerability detected
    2.   Use of network devices other than the registered PC
    3.   Network flooding/scanning,  sending SPAM email
    4.   Sharing of network resources to others e.g. network outlet, user account, etc.
    5.   P2P file sharing
    6.   Copyright infringement

  • I have some problems with network connection, what can I do?

Should you have any enquiry about network connection in residence or found any problems about the IP Phone in common room or machines (computers, peripherals, etc) of the computer room in each hall.
