Dr KIM Dal Young joined the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences in July 2018 as an Assistant Professor in Veterinary Virology in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health.

He obtained a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) Degree from Chungbuk National University in South Korea and then worked for two years as a Veterinary Officer at the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service (NVRQS) institution in South Korea. He completed a PhD degree at the College of Veterinary Medicine (Department of Pathobiology) at Kansas State University, USA. His PhD project was “Live attenuated marker vaccine development of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) using a multifunctional nsp2 domain”.

During his postdoctoral training period, he switched his research focus to mosquito-borne flaviviruses such as West Nile/Dengue/Yellow fever viruses and performed research at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, USA. After relocation to the Department of Microbiology at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, USA, he worked in a variety of public health research projects related to the arbovirus group. He was involved in zoonotic alphavirus research including the development of live attenuated chimeric Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) vaccine candidates, the biochemical characterisation of the conserved packaging signal of all alphavirus lineages, the development of an enhanced version of the Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) based replicon system and its application in vivo, identification of new host proteins that provide an efficient ground as replication complex formation for the genomic replication of VEEV and Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) etc.

KIM’s research will be focusing on the elucidation of molecular mechanisms of zoonotic viral pathogens that can provide the groundworks for the development of therapeutic methods. He is devoted to producing a universal delivery vehicle by utilising uncharacterised viruses that will be an efficient platform for the generation of pseudoinfectious viruses (PIV) that can become next generation vaccine candidates.
